In the words of the Azorean writer Vitorino Nemésio (1956): "Among the larger islands, only one the Island of Pico - has failed to reach urban dencity. Its mountain ranges and porous soil made the island unfit for agriculture and pasture lands; instead, it specialized in fishing, winery, and orchards - three types of activity that hardly generate the craftsmen and merchants which constitute the fertile foundation for those feverish and often monstrous things we call cities."
